Dating In The Bay Area As A Gay Man: Apps, Singles Events, Matchmakers
Dating in the San Francisco Bay Area has gotten worse for everyone since the pandemic. It’s not COVID made it impossible to date, but rather people failed to adjust to new reality, overlooked basic items needed to date (friends, hobbies, leaving home, being happy on your own and prioritizing exercise, eating well & mental health etc.).
I am not saying people should have overcome the pandemic unscathed but unless people address the above items, dating will continue to be brutal. The more people rely on dating apps for most or even all of their dating efforts, the more impossible, frustrating, time-consuming and defeated one may feel. Dating apps are still someting I recommend using in 2026 but only sparingly.
There is so shortage of gay dating apps these and to someone new to dating apps, having specializations seems like a great idea until you actually use the app and realize they don’t live up to expectations (unless your focus is on something casual). If you are looking for advice on that, you can stop reading. My specialty is working with relationship focused men and women, gay and straight. Although straight men was my largest demographic before the pandemic, straight women and gay men are my fastest growing clientele.
My ideal client is someone I think who can use my help and would improve the societal dating pool and frankly, straight men have dropped the ball here in the Bay Area. The bar is so low and despite my efforts, I have had to turn down more and more inquiries since 2020 (up to 85% up from 70%). Although gay men are still a small portion on my customer demographics, I have had the most success with them.
Below are some insights and tips on how to navigate dating in the San Francisco Bay Area as a gay man.

Dating As A Gay Man In San Francisco
A lot of gay men relocate to San Francisco as it is viewed as one of the most progressive, welcoming cities in the world. While this is true, like all groups, genders and cities, there are definitely cliques and discrimination.
If you spend much time here in San Francisco, you will find that some gay men here have a type whether it is size, ethinicity, personality, facial hair, athleticism or fetishes. This is pretty common even in straight male population here but it can feel like its on steroids in the gay community.
The gay dating population is so large here, that despite these preferences, one should be able to find someone even if they have super specific qualities or are in the minority themselves but that can prove to be difficult, especially if you rely solely on apps or are too trusting of people (more on that later).
After working as a dating profile photographer and dating coach in San Francisco for more than 10 years, one of the biggest complaints I have heard from gay men is around how hard it is to find a relationship – most men they encounter are looking for something casual.
Grindr was one of the first gay dating apps on the market and they reinforced some of the stereotypes that some men try to avoid i.e. position, body type while making intentions an afterthought. Even intentions may not be reliable as not everyone is truthful about what they seek i.e. LTR when that may not be accurate or they may be seeking something casual in the meantime or in addition to an LTR.
Hookup Culture San Francisco Bay Area
The hookup culture is quite prominent in San Francisco. If you want something casual, there is no shortage of that as apps like Grindr can feel like food ordering apps.
While there are plenty of men seeking something long-term, it can feel like that is such a small percentage given those seeking something casual are more vocal, outgoing, and likely to use the volume approach (like, message as many guys as humanly possible and see who responds). Don’t let this get you down.
Finding someone who is also seeking an LTR in San Francisco can be as simple as using an app like Hinge. It’s not perfect and while it’s getting worse, it’s still preferred by men seeking something serious. That said, you have to be alert and do you due diligence.
Some men may hide or lie about intentions to bypass your filters. In order to figure out someone’s intentions, you have to analyze profiles, messages, assess date ideas, effort and spend time together. Rushing into things may make thigns difficult to assess.

Best Gay Dating Apps San Francisco Bay Area
I have stated for quite a while that Hinge is still the best app for gay men seeking an LTR but should be used as a introduction tool rather than an ordering apps. Free will exists. Some people lie. Some many change their minds. Just because someone wants a relationship doesn’t mean they want it now or with you unfortunately. Don’t take this personal but I know that may not remove the sting of being lied to.
Hinge may seem pretty straightforward to use but a lot of people (gay and straight) often overlook the implications of what they put in their profiles (and leave out) as well as what the filters they select imply (or inadvertantly remove). If your body type, interests, looks are in the majority, this may not affect you as much but for those in the minority, specially race (black men), there is some bias issues in the app that can limit visibility and make it harder to get likes.
If you rely on dating apps for all or even most of your dating efforts, it can be brutal. I always recommend all clients to use apps sparingly: 20-30% of all dating efforts (~20-30 minutes a day, 2-3 times a week for liking, sending comments). Spending too much time on apps can lead to diminishing returns and can even take a toll on mental health.
Most people on dating apps don’t take them seriously (photos, questions, prompts, filters etc). You don’t need perfect photos or have be an expert writer but you do need to put in effort and view your profile in the way someone else views it (ideally not friends as they sometimes can be biased). Analyzing profile and people is an incredible skill and like all skills, they might be easier for some than others but require practice to get better at them.
Dating As A Gay Black Man In San Francisco
One of the demographics that have had the hardest time dating in San Francisco (at least among clients) is gay black men. Whenever someone on the dating app is in the minority (preference), they tend to get fewer likes but more so, more x’s or left swipes (depending on the apps).
The scoring system is ultimately used to either show your profile to incentivize others to pay/upgrade for features or get you to pay/upgrade subscriptions to get more likes, matches. When you are brand new to apps, men and women, gay and straight are often boosted on dating apps for a period of time and then based on interest, this activity will hold or slowly (or suddenly drop off). See new user boosts on dating apps.
Rather than spend more time on apps, paying for boosts or trying more dating apps, I highly recommend expanding hobbies, making friends, focusing on physical and mental health as well as trying to meet people organically (yes, people still do that). One’s default assumption may lead to spending more time in the Castro but many gay men I know (clients and friends) view it sort of a Disneyland for people new to the city or those seeking attention or being on the prowl.
Some clients have had success spending more time in places like Oakland that are more diverse, have strong cultural connections and tend to have more of a communal feel in their events and venues than those in San Francisco.
Investing in hobbies, classes, volunteering has yielded better (although sometimes fewer yet higher quality) introductions. Rather than focus on interests that are listed on Reddit, focus on hobbies you are genuinely interested in or at least curious about. On top of that, try a few classes, rather than dismissing them after 1 poor outing.
Lastly, hobbies and interests that are more communal, social, and ones beyond homebody ones typically inrease chances of meeting others that are more introverted, indoors and solo activities.

Where To Meet Single Gay Men Bay Area
There is no one single best way to meet single gay men in the San Francisco Bay Area, even if there was, it would be hit or missed based on your own unique interests, efforts, self-awareness, timing and luck. Having talked to clients for over a dozen years in my line of work, I have seen men meet their partners everywhere from clubs, fundraisers, art openings, cafes, singles events, dating apps, communal tables, bars seats at restaurants, through friends, dinner parties, food events, and more.
Regardless of interested, best to try more than one outlet, be present, be happy on your own and make an effort (make a move). If you are waiting others to make the first move, you will likely get attention from guys who are smooth talkers, looking for something casual etc. Take control of your life and don’t be passenger all the time.
Gay Singles Events, Speed Dating San Francisco Bay Area
Inevitably, you may get tired of apps and swear them off, yet get frustrated with trying to meet people organically to the point that you start shifting your focus on singles events and/or speed dating.
Singles events and speed dating can be wildly hit or miss given lack of accountability (anyone can create an event on Eventbrite and often organizers have no Google/Yelp listings, reviews). Many of them lack focus (super generic i.e. no age range) or lack any trust (curation, screening).
It is possible to have luck at such singles & dating events but like dating apps, don’t rely on them for all or even most of your dating efforts. Use them sparingly.
Gay Matchmakers San Francisco Bay Area
If you search gay matchmakers in the San Francisco Bay Area, you will see one prominent site pop up again and again. If you take a closer look, you will see they are not local (based overseas). There are no employees listed on Linkedin who live in the Bay Area. Furthermore, you won’t find any Yelp or Google business listings nor reviews (at least not yet). You should proceed with caution as any dating or matchmaking service that claims to be around for years yet has not listing nor reviews should be seen as a red flag.
Sure there are privacy issues and clients may want to remain anonymous but over time, some clients will be more than happy to write reviews.
Tl;dr Is Dating As A Gay Man In San Francisco Hard?
Dating can be brutal, especially if you are too trusting of people. Not everyone has the same intentions or believes in the same bare minimum of etiquette. Developing a thick skin while simultaneously giving others benefit of the doubt (within reason) is a delicate balancing act that can be exhausting.
Most people might say you will meet someone when you stop looking but better advice says you will meet people when you least expect it while doing self-work, expanding hobbies/friends, being happy on your own, leaving home more often and making a sincere effort.
